How to go for a trek to Milam Glacier in Uttrakhand?

If you are coming from New Delhi, catch a train or bus to Kathgodam which is near Nainital approx 300km. From Kathgodam you can hire a taxi or a local bus to the city called Munsiyari. Stay a day or two in Munsiyari to take rest before starting the trek to Milam Glacier.

While your stay at Munsiyari you can arrange a porter to carry your luggage in case you need help as it will be very useful as for many carrying luggage and tent will be too much exhausting to trek to Milam glacier.

Day 1-
You travel out 5-8 km out of Munsiyari by a local transport Mahindra max where it drops you to the dead end road.

From there you walk down the slope and then start your trek to Lilam the first stop, it is also the first pit-stop of ITBP camp where you have to register your names and also while returning for keeping a track record in case you go missing.

You will find small waterfalls quite frequently. These are melted snow flowing down from mountains to mountains.

People living here have no idea how the civilization is in cities like they haven't seen trains in their lifetime 


Steep trek route to Milam glacier, basically this whole trek was a trade route between India and China, close to Tibet border. After Indo-China war in 1962, this trade route was closed.

This is the small hut shaped place where you can eat food and also sleep at night.


 Local food that you can eat, made in pure melted snow water from the mountains.









A Quechua tent - You must carry it as its going to be your home for the entire trek.

Yarsagumba, which is used for making various medicines is also known as ‘Himalayan Viagra’, is the most expensive bio-resource available in the world today. This is called caterpillar grass it is smuggled into China as around 103 types of medicines are made out of it. Sometimes it fetches 15 lakhs a Kilo.



These houses almost 200 years old, left vacant after Indo-China war as this trek was the trading route of India and China.
